What's New -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Version 0.3 (2/19/01): The walkthrough now covers up to the Dry Dry Ruins. There wasn't too much of a update to the walkthrough here, but I did add a bit to the other sections to make up for it! Version 0.2 (2/16/01): This update includes a walkthrough all the way through Chapter 1. I've also added a few other things here and there, as you may see when you look around. Version 0.15 (2/14/01): I got a bit of an update for today here! The walkthrough covers up to the Koopa Bros. Fortress, but I also added quite a bit of information on the other sections of the guide as well. Next update will have a bigger chunk of the walkthrough included! Version 0.1 (2/11/01): The first version of this FAQ was started. It has the first areas of the game covered so far, but look for much more to be added soon! ****************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 2. Introduction -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Mario is back on the Nintendo 64 after all these years for the "sequel" to the original Super Mario RPG for the SNES. This game takes on more of a 2-dimensional appearance this time around, since the game takes place in a 3D world with 2D characters. There are many new items and features to be taken advantage of in this game as well. It's definitely worth getting, and I highly recommend it, too! ****************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 3. Story -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Far, far away beyond the sky, way above the clouds, it's been said that there was a haven where the Stars lived. In the sanctuary of Star Haven there rested a fabled treasure called the Star Rod, which had the power to grant all wishes. Using this wondrous Star Rod, the seven revered Star Spirits watched over our peaceful world carefully... very carefully. Then one day, a terrible thing happened... The evil King Bowser appeared in Star Haven and stole the Star Rod! Using its incredible power he quickly imprisoned the seven Star Spirits! Completely unaware of the trouble in far-off Star Haven, Mario was back home in the Mushroom Kingdom, eagerly reading a letter from Princess Peach. It was an invitation to a party at the castle! With much anticipation, he and his brother Luigi set off for the party, oblivious to the chaos that lay ahead... ****************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 4. Controls -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Control Stick: Move around in battle or menus Start: Bring up menu screen (when not in battle) A: Confirm selection, jump, talk to people, open doors, perform current action in battle B: Use Hammer outside battle, cancel selection, speed up dialogue when talking to someone Z: Spin-dash to move faster, review previous parts of a conversation, switch order of attacking in battle C-Up: View status bar outside battle C-Left: Use an item outside battle C-Down: Perform action with current party member(s) C-Right: Switch between party members (if you have more than 1 other partner) ****************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 5. Characters -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ===== Mario ===== Obviously, Mario is the 2D hero of this game, hence the game's title! Armed with his trusty Hammer and his famous Jump attack, he's ready to take on the baddies all throughout this game! Mario's Moves ------------- Hammer: In battle, Mario can use his trusty hammer to attack. There are more moves you can do with the Hammer, depending on the badges you have equipped. To attack with the Hammer, hold Left on the Control Stick until the circle flashes, then release to attack. Jump: As in the other Mario games, he uses a Jump attack as well. The types of these jumps that can be performed depend on the badges you have as well. Before you land on the enemy, press A again to jump on them again to cause extra damage. Star Powers: As you free the Star Spirits, Mario will be able to use Star Powers in battle, provided there is enough power in the star meter. There is another section in this guide that focuses on those attacks, so look in there if you need help. ========= Goombario ========= This mushroom kid is the first partner Mario has in his adventure. From the start, Goombario is a useful character to have on your team with his unique ability to tell you any enemy's stats on the spot. If you press C-Down with Goombario as your current partner, he'll talk to you about the current area and what you should do next. Goombario's Moves ----------------- Headbonk: Goombario uses his head to hit an enemy from above. Press A before landing to hit the enemy a second time. Beware that you don't use this on enemies with spikes on their heads or you'll take some damage! Tattle: Perhaps his most useful move is this one. Use this on any enemy or boss to determine their HP, as well as their attack and defense levels. You'll also receive a hint on how to deal with that enemy, so pay attention when you use this move! ====== Kooper ====== This shelled character is the second person to join Mario's party. His Shell Toss ability, which can be used outside battle (press C-Down), can be extremely useful when reaching far away items, switches, etc. He's definitely a great asset to your crew! Kooper's Moves -------------- Shell Toss: When used in battle, Kooper hides inside his shell and spins towards an enemy, causing some damage. Use this move just like you would Mario's Hammer attack; pull back on the Control Stick to charge up, then release to attack. Power Shell: This is basically a more powerful and effective version of the Shell Toss. Instead of hitting only one enemy, it hits all the enemies in a row. However, it costs 3 FP each time you use this attack. ======== Bombette ======== This pink Bob-omb is your third companion after you help it escape from the cell in the Koopa Bros. Fortress. Her main use is to blow open holes in cracked walls and other weak objects. Bombette's Moves ---------------- Body Slam: As the name implies, Bombette rams herself into an enemy to attack. Charge it up by holding A until the meter becomes full and the circle flashes, then release to attack. Bomb: Her signature move allows her to explode, causing a good amount of damage to the enemies she hits. To use effectively, press A as fast as you can to fill the meter to the 100% mark; that way, the attack is at its strongest point when used. Power Bomb: This is a much more powerful version of her Bomb ability. Although this one costs 6 FP per use, she can explode, causing great amounts of damage to all enemies on the ground. ========= Parakarry ========= This Paratroopa delivers mail all around the Mushroom Kingdom. You bump into him at Mt. Rugged, where he happens to have lost some Letters. His contribution to the group is the ability to carry Mario over small gaps, so this guy will prove to be very useful throughout the game. Parakarry's Moves ----------------- Sky Dive: With this, Parakarry basically rams into the enemy from within his shell in mid-air. Press A before making contact to cause extra damage. Shell Shot: This move allows Parakarry to rocket into an enemy at high speed, causing a good amount of damage. The action command for this one is unique as well. To use, hold Left on the Control Stick while the crosshair line moves up and down. Line it up with the blue target surrounding the enemy you picked, then release to rocket into the target. ****************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 6. Walkthrough -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Introduction ------------ The game opens outside Mario and Luigi's house, when Parakarry delivers a letter to them. Luigi picks up the letter and brings it inside, then reads it to Mario. It's an invitation to a party at Princess Peach's castle. The two leave the house and head through town, then finally arrive at the castle. After a short talk, you'll gain control of Mario. So, head straight up the stairs and through the big door to the next room. Go left and up some more steps, then continue into the next room. Continue through the next couple of rooms until you meet up with Princess Peach. After a conversation with Peach, the ground outside will start shaking and a giant castle will come out of the ground and carry Peach's castle high into the sky. Bowser and his assistant then appear and taunt Mario. After that, you'll enter battle against Bowser. Just keep using the Jump attack to hurt him until Bowser uses the Star Rod and defeats you with his fiery breath (it's impossible to win this battle, by the way). When the battle ends, he'll knock you out of the castle, and you'll land in a forest below. When you land in the forest, the 7 Star Spirits will appear and attempt to revive Mario while he's unconscious. They'll disappear and a Goomba will find Mario in the forest. It'll call for help, and the scene will end. Goomba Village -------------- When the scene opens again, Mario will be lying in a bed in a small house. A Star Spirit will appear again and tell you to meet it at the Shooting Star Summit. After that, it'll disappear and Mario will finally wake up. Toad will then enter the house and talk for a few moments, and then he'll suggest you pay the Goombas a visit. So, go left and exit this house. Talk to the Goomba children, then go right and enter the larger building. Talk to Gooma (the grandmother) inside, and then exit the house. One of the children will tell you that the gate is finally fixed. So, go right and use the Save Block if you like, then talk to the father Goomba standing by the gate. After he tells you where to go, Kammy Koopa will fly in. She'll drop a giant block on the gate, then fly away. Since you can't get around it, the Goomba father will ask you to retrieve the hammer the grandfather was using to fix the veranda. Go left and back into the large building again. Inside, go right and up through the back door to the veranda. There is nothing out there, so you'll fall down to the area below, which is Jr. Troopa's Playground. Jr. Troopa's Playground ----------------------- When you land, go right and down, then talk to the Goompa (grandfather Goomba). He says that there's no way back to the house for now since the path is blocked. Mario asks about using the hammer, but Goompa says it's lost somewhere, so he'll follow you around to help look for it. Follow the path left to the next area, then Goompa will tell you to check in the bushes to find it. Go behind each bush and press A when the exclamation point appears to shake out whatever is in the branches. Collect the coins that you find, and continue searching until you eventually shake out the Hammer. Now, destroy the blocks on the ground and hit the trees with the Hammer (press B). You should get a Dolly by hitting one of the trees. Then, take the path right to get out of this area. Goompa will run ahead, but gets stopped by the Jr. Troopa. You'll then enter a battle against it. Read the Bosses section for some quick help on defeating it. After the battle, continue right to the next area. Here, head right and destroy the large block with the Hammer, then destroy some more blocks. Hit the block with the heart inside to recover your health, then bounce on the trampoline nearby to reach the higher ledge. Collect the Fire Flower, then jump back down and go right to the next area. There, go right along the path and defeat the Goombas and Spiked Goombas along the way. When you can go up, jump to the higher ledge and go left and up to the top. Once there, go left and collect a Star Piece. Now, head all the way right and continue along the path to the next area, which is Goomba Village. Goomba Village -------------- Back in the Goomba Village, go right and open the locked gate. Then, the children will all great Goompa. He'll run inside to get something for you. Goombario will talk to you for a moment, and then Goompa will come back out and give you the Power Jump Badge. After that, he'll tell Goombario to accompany you on your journey, so you'll now have a second party member! Before you do anything else, talk to Goombaria and give her the Dolly you found to get a Star Piece. Now, equip the Power Jump Badge on Mario and save your game via the nearby Save Block. Then, go right and destroy the large block in your way. With the path cleared, head right and out of the Goomba Village. Goomba Road ----------- Upon starting along the path to Toad Town, head right and read the sign along the road. Defeat the Goomba that jumps off it to attack, then continue right and defeat those enemies as well. Jump up and hit the blocks to get a few coins, then continue going right into the next area. There, go right and defeat a Spiked Goomba. After that, jump up and hit the block you come across to get the Close Call Badge. Be sure to equip this one right away! Continue right and read the sign, then grab the Mushroom that falls from it. Go right some more and defeat a Paragoomba, and then hit the Heart Block to recover your HP/FP. Now, head right into the next scene. In this scene, go right towards the trampoline and the Goomba Bros. will appear on the high ledge. They'll talk for a moment before jumping down to engage in battle with you. Read the Bosses section for help on defeating them. After you win (you should've gained a level by now), they'll run away scared! So, go right and save with the Save Block, then jump on the nearby trampoline to reach the high ledge. Now, go right into the next area. Here, read the sign with the picture of a mushroom on it. Defeat the Goomba that jumps off the sign, then head right to the following area to reach King Goomba's Fortress. King Goomba's Fortress ---------------------- When you arrive here, you'll see a short scene where the Red and Blue Goombas are running to the fort after their defeat. They whine to the Goomba King, and then all 3 of them come outside to meet your group. You'll then enter a battle against these guys, so read the Bosses section for help on beating them quickly. After that battle, the 3 will retreat to the inside of the fortress, leaving you outside. So, go up to the tree nearby and hit it with the Hammer to get a Star Piece. Then, go to the locked door of the fortress and hit A to listen in on their conversation inside. They'll hint at a hidden switch outside the fortress. Check behind the light-colored bush near the entrance to the fortress to make a switch pop out. Hit the switch and the Goomba King will freak out since you already hit it. The fortress will then come apart and form a bridge across the chasm behind it, and the Goomba King will be sent VERY far away! Now that that's over, go through the fortress and cross the bridge to reach the area at the other end. There, continue right to reach the next area. At this point, you'll see Kammy Koopa spying on you before she flies away. You will also be given the option to save if you'd like. After you're done with that, you'll view a scene of Kammy Koopa returning to Bowser's flying castle. There will be a conversation between the two about Goomba King's defeat, and about the Star Rod's powers. They will then talk about the Star Spirits and how they're being guarded, then they'll mention something about the Koopa Bros. guarding the first one. At that point, the Koopa Bros. will appear and demonstrate their special attack for Bowser, which you aren't allowed to see yet. After realizing noone's guarding the Star Spirit, the Koopa Bros. leave and the scene ends. Now that you're back in control of Mario, head right and down the hill to the bottom. Then, go left and hit the block to get a Sleepy Sheep. Now, continue right a little bit to where the actual path begins. Hit the tree in the background with the Hammer to make a trampoline fall out of its branches. Use it to bounce to the roof covering the path, then open the chest to get the Hammer Throw Badge. After that, go back left and drop down to the ground, then continue all the way right to Toad Town. Toad Town --------- When you enter this town for the first time, Toad will come up to you and talk for a moment. After he's done, start by going around and talking to the people wandering around. Also, be sure to stop by the Item Shop (has a flower sign next to the door) and buy some Honey Syrup and Mushrooms since you'll need them! When you're done here, go back outside and go left to find a green pipe (it's near the entrance to the town). Go down the pipe to warp back to Mario's house. Mario and Luigi's House ----------------------- When you arrive here, Luigi will greet you and tell you how he was worried because of that earthquake. After he's done talking, go inside the house and rest in Mario's bed if you like. Otherwise, go back down the pipe and return to Toad Town. Toad Town --------- When you get back here, go right along the path all the way to the next area. Go up into the grass to the left of the building with the spinning roof, then hit the tree with the Hammer to get another Star Piece. Then, continue right to the center area of town. At that point, head north along the road and go through the large blue gate at the end. Follow the path up and right past where the castle was supposed to be, then continue right to the following area. Here, continue right along the path and take the upper route to reach the Shooting Star Summit. Shooting Star Summit -------------------- When you enter this area, head left and collect the Star Piece you find there. Then, go back to the right and start jumping from ledge to ledge to get up the hill to the very top. Once you reach the summit, go straight to the Star Spirit waiting for you. Talk to the elder spirit and the other spirits will appear around you. They'll all tell you the story about the Star Rod and what Bowser did. After their story is over, you'll be given the option to save your game again. Do what you will, then the scene will shift up to the castle in the sky. It'll show Princess Peach wishing for help before Bowser and Kammy enter the room and taunt her for a moment. After they leave, a small star will knock on the door leading outside and Peach will let it in. It'll then introduce itself as Twink, and will grant her wishes. Since Twink can't handle granting big wishes yet, Peach asks it to bring Mario the Lucky Star and to tell him she's safe. After Twink leaves, the scene will then shift back down to Mario. When you gain control again, head left down the path to leave the area when Twink will suddenly crash into you from the sky. It'll give you the Lucky Star, which allows you to use the "action command" in battle. Choose to watch the demonstration if you want, then Magikoopa will appear to bother you. Engage in battle with this guy, so check out the Bosses section for quick strategy on winning here. After this, Twink will leave and you'll be left to go about on your adventure. So, go left through the next couple areas and get back to Toad Town. Toad Town --------- When you pass through the blue gates again, Toad will meet you and say that Merlon is looking for you. So, go down and left to the house with the spinning roof and knock on the door a few times. You have to do that a few times to get him to open up. After he lets you in, he'll tell you a long and boring story which Mario falls asleep listening to. After Merlon is done, he'll tell you to head to the Koopa Bros. Fortress. Now, leave the house and go right, then enter the Toad House (the one with the mushroom sign hanging above the door). Rest here to recover your HP/FP, then leave the house and save your game. After that, go right along the path and you'll encounter a group of dark-colored Toads that won't let you pass. So, go back to Merlon's place and talk to him about it. Merlon will leave the house, so follow him outside and right towards those dark Toads again. Talk to Merlon and he'll make them reveal their true forms. They happen to be the Koopa Bros. in disguise. They retreat, leaving the path clear for now, so now's your chance. Head right and into the start of Chapter 1! ======================================== Chapter 1: Storming Koopa Bros. Fortress ======================================== Pleasant Path ------------- Upon entering this path east of Toad Town, head right and defeat the enemies you come across. Hit the blocks you pass, especially the red question block since it contains the Dizzy Attack Badge. Then, continue ahead and bust some more blocks to find a Fright Jar. After that, keep going right to the next scene. There, go right and hit the first block you reach to get a POW Block. Defeat the nearby Koopa Troopa, then hit the tree with the Hammer to make a blue switch fall to the ground. Stomp the switch to make a bridge drop down to the right. Go across the bridge to the other side, and hit the block there. Defeat the Spiked Goomba that drops down, then continue right and defeat whatever other enemies are in the way. Go right and jump onto the next ledge, then check behind the fence to find a Sleepy Sheep. Now, continue right along the path, hitting the blocks and defeating enemies along the way. At the top, head right to the next area. There, read the nearby sign to view directions, then take the path going south. Drop down to the lower ledges and follow the path down and around to find 3 blocks on the ground. Hit them with your Hammer to reveal a red treasure box in the air. Hit it to get the Attack FX B Badge. Then, follow the path right into the Koopa Village. Koopa Village ------------- When you enter this village, a Koopa will greet you. However, he'll tell you that there are Fuzzies in the village causing problems for them. At that point, a Fuzzy comes and steals his shell! When you gain control, jump on the Fuzzy with the shell to give it back to the Koopa. After that, help out the other 2 Koopas outside by getting their shells back. Defeat the Fuzzies roaming around, then check out all the bushes in the village to find some Coins, a Dried Shroom, and a Koopa Leaf. Stop in the shop if you want, otherwise head right to the next area of town. There, check behind the bushes nearby to get another Koopa Leaf. Now, help the Koopa get his shell back by attacking the Fuzzy carrying it. Go right and push the blue block towards the center of the lower area, then jump and hit the block to make the shell atop it fall to the ground. After that, defeat the remaining Fuzzies, then knock on the door of the house with the green roof (the house that's shaking every now and then). A Koopa named Kooper will come out and ask you to help him get his shell back from the Fuzzy in his house. So, enter the house and the Fuzzy will run out the other end. Go through the back door and chase it right through the next couple of areas until you reach the forest. When you get there, you'll have to play a guessing game in order to win the shell again. The Fuzzy holding the shell, along with 3 other Fuzzies, will jump from tree to tree above you, and when they stop, you must hit the tree that has the shell. Do that 3 times to win Kooper's Shell! Now that you have the shell, head left towards the exit of this area and Kooper will come running towards you. Give him the shell when prompted to, then choose to let him join your party. Now that everything's settled, go left like you're going to leave and the Fuzzies will all appear and battle you. Defeat the 4 of them, then after they retreat, go left and into the next area. Head left until you reach a few tree stumps you can jump on. Jump onto the first one, then up to the top one. Face the left and press C-Down with Kooper to make him retrieve the HP Plus Badge on the stump you can't reach. Now, continue left all the way to the following area to enter Koopa Village again. Koopa Village ------------- When you arrive here, go left and enter Kooper's home through the back door. Go through the house and exit at the other end. Next, go right and down and push the blue block to the center of the little square area. Jump on that block and hit the block in the air to make a Star Piece fall. Grab it, then enter the right-most house in this area. Talk to the elder Koot and offer to get the book "Koopa Legends" from Kolorado. Leave the house and enter the house to the left of Kooper's house (that's Kolorado's place). Talk to his wife and she'll let you borrow that book. Now, bring it back to Koot in his house to get 1 measly Coin as a reward! After that, exit the house and head left to the other area of town. There, save your game, then head west and exit this town completely. Pleasant Path ------------- Now that you left the village, it's time to head to the Koopa Bros. Fortress. So, head west and up the hill to the very top. Then, follow the path east and across the bridge into the new and unexplored area. Here, go right and collect the Coins in the path, but be ready to do battle with a Koopa Troopa that'll jump out at you! Beat it, then go right to the edge of the high plateau. Use Kooper's Shell Toss (C-Down) to break the block in the air to the right. Next, drop down to the lower area and collect the Thunder Bolt that fell. Then, continue right and to the edge by the water. Use Kooper's Shell Toss to hit the switch at the other side, which makes a bridge appear for you to cross over. Cross to the other side and defeat the Paratroopa, then continue right to the next area. There, continue going to the right while defeating any Koopas in your way. Hit the Heart Block near the end to fully recover your HP and BP, then continue right to enter the Koopa Bros. Fortress. Koopa Bros. Fortress -------------------- When you arrive here, use the nearby Save Block to save your game. Then, go right along the path to the fortress entrance. One of the Koopa Bros. will come out and spot you, then run inside to warn his brothers. Now, continue up and enter the fortress itself. There, follow the path around the room and defeat the Koopa Troopa/Bob-omb team to get a Fortress Key. Use it to open the door to the right, then continue into the next room. There, head right and defeat the Bob-ombs along the way. Then, just continue through the door into the next room. Here, you'll see a quick scene with one of the Koopa Bros. locking a key behind a gate. It'll see you come into the room, then it'll run away. Now, head right and defeat the enemies you encounter along the way. In the middle of the room, you'll see a badge locked in a cell. Go to the back wall to the right of the cell, then walk left through the wall to enter the cell. Collect the Power Bounce Badge, then exit the cell the same way you got in. Then, continue right into the following room. Here, defeat the Koopa Troopa at the other end of the room to make a blue switch appear. Hit that switch to make the large set of stairs in the middle of the room sink into the ground, giving you access to the floor below. So, go down those steps to the lower level. There, just go left into the next room. In this new room, the doors on both sides will raise up so you can't exit, leaving you stuck to fight 3 Paratroopas. Defeat the enemies to lower the doors again, then head left into the next room. Continue left while jumping over the 2 fire bars that are rotating along the path, then collect the Fortress Key at the end. Now, backtrack through the past couple of rooms to the room with the stairs. In that room, go back upstairs and use the key to unlock the door to the right. Then, enter that room. Upon entering this room, you'll witness one of the Koopa Bros. doing something to the floor above you. After he runs away, follow the path up and around to reach the higher level. At the top, go right onto that platform the Koopa Bro tampered with, and hit the block in the air. The floor will give out and you'll fall straight down into a cell on the bottom floor. There, a pink-colored Bob-omb named Bombette will introduce herself to you. After she introduces herself, talk to her again and allow her to join your party. Hit the Heart Block nearby to recover your health, then use Bombette's ability to blow open the cracked wall in the upper corner of the cell. Now, go through that passage and follow the path around to the door. As you approach the door, a Koopa Troopa and 2 Bob-ombs will run in to see what all the racket was from. They'll spot you and Bombette, then battle you. Defeat them, then continue through the door to the next room. There, go up the stairs to the higher level, then go left into the next room. Use Bombette's ability to destroy the cracked wall you see, then enter that cell to get the Fortress Key. Go back to the previous room and continue right to the following room. This time, take the path down and to the right by the cracked wall. Use Bombette to blow it open, then go outside through that hole and open a chest to get the Refund Badge. Go back inside and enter the south door to reach another room. There, save your game and go back to the previous room, then follow the path all the way up to the top again. When you reach the top level this time, go through the left door into that room. Go left and defeat the Paratroopa, then use the key to unlock the door and continue into the next room. Here, go left to the edge of the platform, then switch your party so Kooper is your partner. Use his Shell Toss ability to hit the switch across the gap, which will cause bridges and walls to appear. Now, walk left all the way until you reach the wall, then turn around and use the Shell Toss again to hit the switch, which will make the walls and bridges disappear again. Next, walk to the left edge of the platform you're on, then use the Shell Toss to hit the next switch to make everything appear once again. Continue left to the next wall, then turn around and Shell Toss the switch to lower it. Now that you're at the end, go left and into the next room. Here, defeat the Koopa Troopa and hit the switch to lower the stairs, then go down to the lower floor. At the bottom, switch partners so you have Bombette with you, then destroy the cracked wall on the ledge you previously couldn't reach. Go right through the hole into the next room and collect the Fortress Key you find. Now, go back through the hole and up the stairs to the upper floor again, then unlock the door to the left. Continue left into the next room, then hit the switch to the left to raise the stairs from the water below. Go around to the bottom of those stairs and defeat the Koopa Troopas, then go up to the higher level. At the top of the stairs, continue right and up the ramp to the top. Before entering the door to the right, continue up the path to the very top. There, defeat a Bob-omb and claim the Smash Charge Badge. I recommend you equip that badge right away! Now, go back down to the door you just passed and enter that room. When you get outside here, the Koopa Bros. will come out at the other side and start shooting Bullet Bills at you. Avoid or fight them if you want, then start making your way to the right. A short distance from the beginning of this area, go down and left on another path and use Bombette to destroy a boulder in your way. Then, hit the block and collect the Maple Syrup. Now, go back up to the main path and continue right while fighting your way through lines of Bullet Bills. When you reach the end, fight and defeat the 3 Bill Blasters. After that, go down and right and recover with the Heart Block. Save your game, then go back up and right through the door to the next room. Here, you'll finally encounter the Koopa Bros. They'll taunt you, then move offscreen for a moment. When they return, they'll be in a giant wooden Bowser, which they'll battle you with first. Read the Bosses section for help on defeating this imposter. After you beat the imposter, you'll automatically fight the Koopa Bros. So, read the Bosses section for help on beating them as well. After you win, go right and take the first Star Spirit card to end Chapter 1! Princess Peach's Castle ----------------------- Immediately after the end of Chapter 1, the scene will open inside Peach's castle. She'll talk to Twink about how there's a secret passage in her room. When you gain control of the Princess, check out the fireplace, which is suspiciously large. Then, check out the picture frame to the right of the fireplace to reveal a switch. Hit it to make the fireplace shut off, revealing a hidden doorway behind it. Now, go through that door into the next area. Go all the way left to another switch, then hit it to cause the area you're in to rotate around, which leaves you off in another room. Go left and read the book on the table a few times to get a hint about where Mario is to go next, which is the Dry Dry Ruins. The Princess will then ask Twink to tell Mario that. At that point, Bowser will burst into the room and have his guards take her away. Twink will then follow and leave to tell Mario. Meanwhile, the Eldstar and Mario are outside the Koopa Bros. Fortress. Allow the Eldstar to teach you about Star Power, and it'll give you a couple of Star Powers as thanks for saving the first Star Spirit. After Eldstar leaves, head left and save your game at the Save Block. After that, go left to the next area, which is Pleasant Path. Pleasant Path ------------- When you get back on this path to Toad Town again, go left and you'll find a cracked wall you passed by previously. Use Bombette to blow it up, then go down the pipe you can now access to reach another area. Go right to the next scene, then open the chest to get the FP Plus Badge. Now, go back left to the previous area and go down, then drop down to the lower area again. Now, continue all the way left through the next few areas of Pleasant Path while defeating the enemies along the way. Continue all the way west along this path until you encounter Jr. Troopa again. Battle him (read the Bosses section if you need help), then after you win, continue west into Toad Town. Toad Town --------- When you arrive here again, head left and Twink will appear. He'll pass on what happened at the castle a few moments ago with the Princess, and he'll tell you to head to the Dry Dry Ruins. After he leaves, continue left and south along the path. You'll be stopped by some kid who's promoting his dad's new Badge Shop. Take a look in their shop and buy one of their badges if you like, then continue south to the next area. Here, continue south until you reach the path going west. Go a little further south than that, then head west to find a pipe. The sign next to it reads "Private", but go down that pipe to enter the Toad Town Tunnels. Toad Town Tunnels ----------------- When you enter this place, there really isn't much you can do here for now. For now, head right and save your game, then continue to the next area. There, defeat a Gloomba and hit all the blocks along the back end of the room. Defeat the Spiked Gloomba that falls from one of the blocks. Also, jump up in the empty area between the last two blocks to hit a hidden block containing a Super Shroom. Now, continue right into the next room. Here, go right until a Blooper appears. You'll enter battle against this creature, so read the Bosses section for help on winning. After you win, continue right and open the chest to get the Shrink Stomp Badge. Now, backtrack left a couple rooms and go through the same pipe you came down here in to get back to Toad Town. Toad Town --------- After you get back above ground again, go right and continue south to the next area of town. There, continue all the way to the train tracks. At that point, go left and use Bombette to destroy the rock on the track. After that, go left and talk to the guy with a dark hat and choose to board the train heading to Mt. Rugged. The train will then leave, taking you into Chapter 2! ======================================= Chapter 2: The Mystery of Dry Dry Ruins ======================================= Mt. Rugged ---------- When you arrive at the train station, go left and save your game. Then, head left and check the bushes to find some Coins and an Egg. Next, go north along the path to the top of the mountain. At the top, go right and you'll hear the voice of someone who's lost. A Paratroopa will fly in and crash into Mario accidentally, then introduce himself as Parakarry. He'll ask you to help him by finding a letter he lost in Mt. Rugged. For now, continue right into the next area after hitting the Heart Block if you need the energy. In the next area, go right and up the steps, then continue right and defeat the Monty Mole that appears. After that, follow the path down and right, then hit the block to get a Sleepy Sheep after defeating another Monty Mole that appears. Then, go back up to the higher area and take the path up and right to the next area. There, save your game and continue to the right while defeating the Monty Moles you encounter. Go right and onto the higher ledge, then turn around and switch to Kooper and use his Shell Toss to grab the first Letter on the ledge. Then, just continue right to the next area. Here, go right and jump up to the higher ledge, then follow the path straight up to the peak of the hill. Once at the top, take the path right all the way to the next area. Here, walk to the south and drop down to the lower area. Defeat the Cleft, then grab the Letter to the right. Then, go left and jump on the trampoline to reach the high ledge. There, go back left to the previous area. In this area again, take the path all the way to the left, through the caves, to the following area. There, go left until you can't go any further, then press A at the bar and slide down the hill. You'll jump the gap to reach the ledge across the area. When you land, continue left to the next area. In this area, continue left while defeating the enemies along the way. When you reach the gold trampoline, bounce on it to reach the high ledge, then follow the upper path to the right. Defeat another Cleft and hit the block with the Hammer to get Honey Syrup. Next, go back left to the top of that slide, then press A to slide down it and jump across to another ledge. There, continue all the way right to pick up the third and final Letter. Now, drop down to the lower ledge and head right to the previous area. Go right and slide down to the lower area, then go down and left along the path to the Save Block. Save if you want, otherwise go left to the next area. Go all the way left through this area to reach the following area where Parakarry is waiting. Talk to Parakarry and give him each of the Letters. After he's done talking, take him along and he'll join your party. Now that you have someone new in your group, use the Heart Block and head right to the next area again. In this area, head to the right and jump up the steps, then continue right and defeat the Monty Mole. Go down the steps and turn left, then destroy the block with the Hammer and talk to the creature that comes out of the ground. Hit him with the Hammer to get Whacka's Bump, which is a very good item to have. Now, go back right and up the steps, then continue up and right along the path to reach the next area. Go right and save your game if you like, otherwise keep going to the right and defeat the Monty Moles that appear. Go up the steps, then go right and jump up to the higher ledge. Have Parakarry fly you to the left across the 2 gaps to the ledge with the Quake Hammer Badge. After that, head back to the right and continue to the next area. There, go right and jump onto the higher ledge. Instead of going up the hill, continue along the path to the right, then use Parakarry to fly across the gap. Talk to the plant that jumps out of the ground and it'll give you a Seed that should be planted in Toad Town. Now, go back left to the hill and go up it this time. At the top, continue right to the next area. Go right and have Parakarry fly you across to the ledge you previously couldn't reach. Go across the bridge and the buzzard in the background will fly over and confront you. It'll ask for your name, so pick either Mario or Princess Peach if you want to battle, or Luigi if you want to avoid the fight. I chose to fight, so read the Bosses section for help on winning. After the fight, Buzzar will fall off the mountain in defeat. Now, follow the path downhill and into the next area. There, go right and down a couple more ledges. Use the Heart Block and save your game at the bottom, then continue down and right into Dry Dry Desert. Dry Dry Desert -------------- When you enter this area, head right to reach a campsite. Talk to the Koopa with the moustache (Kolorado), and he'll tell you about his search for the Dry Dry Ruins. After that, have Parakarry deliver the Letter you found in Mt. Rugged to gain a Star Piece. Then, take the path north to the next scene. Here, defeat the Bandits, then go up to the block on the ground and hit it once with the Hammer to make a block appear in the air. Hit it to get a Mushroom. Hit the ground block 10 times total to make a block with a Super Shroom appear. Hit it 100 times total to make a third block appear with an Ultra Shroom inside. After you collect those, continue north to the next area. Go up and jump onto the rock to the right, then jump again to make a hidden block appear. Collect the Thunder Rage inside, then head east 2 scenes. At that point, head south 1 scene. There, defeat the enemies and hit the blocks with your Hammer to get 4 Coins and a Fire Flower. Next, head south 3 scenes. Hit the blocks in that area to get some Coins, then continue down to the following area. From there, go left to the next scene, then stand on the rock in the middle of the area and jump to reveal a hidden block. Grab the Attack FX C Badge, then go right to the previous area. From there, go right to the following scene, then go north 2 scenes. Hit the block to get 1 Coin there, then continue up to the next scene. Here, you'll find a whirlwind moving around. Jump into it to be brought to another area. There, go right and stand in the middle of the formation of 3 palm trees, then jump to reveal a block containing the Runaway Pay Badge. At this point, go up to the next scene. Here, hit the blocks you find to get some Coins and a Honey Syrup. Then, continue up one scene, then right one. There, go up and you'll find a Fire Flower hiding behind a cactus. Now, defeat the enemies and head south for 2 scenes. There, hit all the blocks to get some more Coins. Then, go south 2 more scenes to find a greener area. Here, defeat some enemies and hit the block to get Coins, then check behind the bushes in the lower-right corner of the area to find a Tasty Tonic. Then, go left and into the next scene. Here, jump into the whirlwind and it'll take you to another area. You'll land on the high ledge next to the Spin Attack Badge (you passed by here a few moments ago, but couldn't jump high enough). Take the badge, then drop to the ground. Go left and jump onto the higher ledge with the block on it. Stand on the block and call out Kooper. Use his Shell Toss to break the block in the air to the left, then pick up the Stop Watch that falls. After that, go south 1 scene, then east 1 scene. When you arrive at the oasis, go down and right to find a Super Block, which upgrades the power of one of your partners. I recommend you use this one on Bombette since her new ability is the most useful at this point in the game. After you finish with that, hit the nearby Heart Block, as well as the 2 large trees in the area with your Hammer to get a Lemon and a Lime. Then, go up to the next area. Here, go up and hit the block to get a Coin, then jump on the block. Jump again to make a hidden block appear and an item fall out. Grab the Life Shroom and go up to the next area. There, go up and right to reach the Dry Dry Outpost. Dry Dry Outpost --------------- When you enter this desert village, go right and you'll see a mouse come out of the shop and run away. Follow him by going all the way right to the second area of town. There, continue all the way right to the last house in town. Talk to the masked mouse in front of that house and give him the Lemon you found by that oasis in the desert. He'll become happy and will let you ask him something, so ask how to find Mr. Moustafa. He'll tell you to go to the shop in town and buy a Dried Shroom, then a Dusty Hammer, in that order. After he's done, head left to the next area and enter the shop. Buy those 2 items in the right order and the shopkeeper will come and start talking to you. He'll tell you how to find Moustafa as well. Now, exit the shop and save your game nearby. Then, head right to the second half of town. Go all the way to the house Sheek was standing in front of and enter it. Go right out the side and jump on the crates to reach the roof. Then, go left across the roofs to the top of another building. Grab the Letter hiding behind a pot, then continue left and jump across the gap to another ledge. Enter that building and talk to Sheek inside. He'll reveal that he is Moustafa, then he'll tell you how to reach the Dry Dry Ruins. He'll also give you the Pulse Stone to find your way there. After Moustafa finishes talking, leave the room and drop down to the lower area, then go left to the next area. Continue left and save your game once again. Now, continue left and leave the Dry Dry Outpost. Dry Dry Desert -------------- Back in the desert, head north until you can't go any further. At that point, start going west. Keep going west through the desert until you reach an area where there's a stone platform in the middle of the area. Go up to it and use the Pulse Stone to cause the Dry Dry Ruins to emerge. After that, use the Heart Block to the left of the ruins to recover. Then, go up and enter the actual ruins. ****************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 7. Bill Blaster HP: 4 Attack Power: 0 Defense Power: 1 Note: Although this cannon enemy won't directly hurt you, it'll shoot out a Bullet Bill to attack you instead. Also, Jump attacks won't hurt because of its strong shell. Bob-omb HP: 3 Attack Power: 1 Defense Power: 0 Note: Beware when attacking this enemy because if you don't kill it in a single hit, it'll charge at you and explode, causing some damage to you. Bosses -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Jr. Troopa (First Fight) Found: Jr. Troopa's Playground HP: 5 Star Points: 20 Attack Power: 1 Defense Power: 0 Strategy: This guy isn't really too tough for you to defeat. Just Jump or use the Hammer to attack. Don't worry about its attacks towards you since they aren't too strong. Just keep on fighting until you defeat it. Red Goomba/Blue Goomba Found: Goomba Road HP: 7 (Red), 6 (Blue) Star Points: 20 Attack Power: 1 (Both) Defense Power: 0 (Both) Strategy: Despite the fact that these two have more HP than previous Enemies you've fought, they're still pretty easy. Just use lots of jump and hammer attacks, concentrating on beating one at a time. If you run low on health, use a Mushroom. Otherwise, keep attacking until you win! Goomba King/Red Goomba/Blue Goomba Found: King Goomba's Fortress HP: 10 (King), 2 (Red), 2 (Blue) Star Points: 30 Attack Power: 1 (All) Defense Power: 0 (All) Strategy: The battle against the King of the Goombas, as well as its two cronies, isn't really that big of a deal. Start off by using Jump attacks and Goombario's Headbonk attack to defeat the Red and Blue Goombas early on. After you defeat both of them, concentrate on defeating Goomba King. To cause lots of damage when it's your turn to attack, aim your attack at the Goomnut Tree (the part of the tree with the bandage to the left of the boss). It'll drop a giant nut on the boss, causing a good amount of damage. After that, just keep on using regular attacks and such until you win the battle. Magikoopa Found: Outside Shooting Star Summit HP: 8 Star Points: 15 Attack Power: 3 Defense Power: 0 Strategy: Well, this guy is a bit tougher than previous enemies, but he still isn't too much to worry about. Now is also a good time to start using those timed attacks Twink taught you minutes earlier! Attack Magikoopa a few times to knock him off his broom. Watch out because his magic attacks are pretty strong and can hurt quite a bit. Just keep on attacking this guy until you win. Chan Found: Dojo in Toad Town HP: 15 Star Points: N/A Attack Power: 2 Defense Power: 2 Strategy: This guy is your first opponent in the Dojo, and he is such a pushover! Have Mario Jump on him to flip him upside-down, then have Goombario attack on his turn. Repeat that process several times while using the timed attacks until you win this fight. Lee Found: Dojo in Toad Town HP: 20 Star Points: N/A Attack Power: N/A Defense Power: N/A Strategy: Being the second boss in the lineup at the Dojo, Lee isn't too tough, either. His main move is to morph into a duplicate of Goombario, which isn't that big of a deal. Use timed attacks to hurt this guy while healing when and if it's necessary. Keep up a steady attack pattern and this guy will be history very quickly. Bowser??? Found: Koopa Bros. Fortress HP: 10 Star Points: N/A Attack Power: 1 Defense Power: 1 Strategy: This giant imposter of King Bowser isn't too tough at all. It's invincible to jump attacks, but you can just hit it with lots of Hammer attacks instead. Just use lots of attacks until you destroy this simple creation. Koopa Bros. Found: Koopa Bros. Fortress HP: 5 (per Koopa Bro) Star Points: 30 Attack Power: 1 Defense Power: 1 Strategy: You fight these guys directly after defeating the fake Bowser. They start off all standing on top of each other like a tower, then they'll do their spinning attack, which'll take a good amount of HP from you. Have Bombette use her Bomb attack to knock them all down, then while they're flipped over, use regular attacks and POW Blocks (if you have any). Also, you should switch Bombette with Kooper so you can hit these guys all at once. Repeat the above pattern a few times until you defeat all 4 of the Koopa Bros. Jr. Troopa (2nd Fight) Found: Pleasant Path HP: 15 Star Points: 20 Attack Power: 2 Defense Power: 1 Strategy: This time when you fight Jr. Troppa, he has a new move, which is hiding inside of its egg to protect itself from attacks. This guy shouldn't be a big deal though. Just use Hammer attacks, and have Bombette use her Bomb move to cause serious damage as well. Heal when needed, and keep on attacking until you win. Blooper (First Fight) Found: Toad Town Tunnels HP: 30 Star Points: 20 Attack Power: 3 Defense Power: 0 Strategy: This is the weakest Blooper you'll come across in the Toad Town Tunnels, and it really isn't too hard of a battle if you have the right badges equipped. If you have the Power Bounce Badge, you can easily make quick work of this guy. Just keep on using Power Bounces and using Refresh every now and then to recover some HP and FP. Repeat the above process until you beat this guy. Buzzar Found: Mt. Rugged HP: 40 Star Points: 15 Attack Power: 3 Defense Power: 0 Strategy: Well, this giant bird isn't too tough, although the battle can be a bit lengthy if not properly prepared. Also, your Hammer is useless here, so you're going to rely on Jump attacks for the whole fight. If you have the Power Bounce Badge equipped, use the Power Bounce while using the action command to score multiple hits. When Buzzar attacks, sometimes the screen will tell you to press A repeatedly to get away or to reduce the blow of its attack. Press A rapidly to get out, then continue your attack while recovering HP/FP if needed until you win. ****************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 9.
